New Project for a New Year

Colette got a stack of vintage patterns for Christmas AND a sewing machine.  She’s chosen one of the patterns for her latest project, a 1940′s dress.  She’s making the short-sleeved version.  (I found it interesting that the one with the longer sleeves called that sleeve’s length “bracelet length”.)  This is the first time either of us have worked with a dress pattern that old.  Quite some differences…the notches are all cut inward, there are no arrows to keep the pattern on the straight grain of the fabric (just a couple of holes), seams are 1/2″,  there is no writing at all on the pattern pieces, and the instructions are either very lengthy or almost nonexistent (“make a dart”).

She chose a small plaid for the fabric.

She's eliminating the scallops, so it ought to be pretty straightforward.  She's optimistic that she can start and finish it this week.

  1. Oh my, what a lucky girl! Love the pattern. I am partial to the lovely feminine designs of the 40s and 50s - though most of my patterns are aprons. I can't wait to see the finished project.

  2. Yes, we love the femininity of fashions from bygone times too! I'll be sure and show the finished product!
